Artificial Intelligence

In 2019, lower respiratory infections such as tuberculosis, pneumonia and COPD accounted for almost 10% of deaths in Africa. The current situation is exacerbated by the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. Rapid and reliable imaging of the lungs is a crucial tool in studying, diagnosing and treating these diseases.

Chest radiography, by far, is the most widespread radiological exam in Ethiopia and other African countries. Unfortunately, the disproportionately high number of patients per radiologist in these parts of the world cause a high variance across interpretations and prolonged wait times.

We’re are working on integrating a clinical decision support system (CDSS) for diagnosing and treating lower respiratory infections. Moreover, the tool will quantify the severity of the disease and assess the efficacy of administered treatment. The CDSS will be integrated into our established hospital system and tested across several medical facilities in and around Addis Ababa.
